It happened 55 years ago tonight, but I remember it as if it were yesterday. My intended wife and a friend of mine, Paul, who was to be our best man in a couple of weeks, took the train from Yokohama, Japan, down to Yokosuka, the U.S. Naval Base, where a Lutheran Chaplain was conducting a Christmas Eve Service. It was a crisp cold evening, but no snow.
Following the service, which was attended probably by 50 people, Yoko, Paul and I walked back to the train station to go back to our base in Yokohama. We were totally surprised when the station master told us that the last train for Yokohama had left already, and there would be no more trains that evening. What to do?
We began walking around town, trying to figure out where we could stay for the night, but everywhere we inquired, they were completely full — just as we are told in the original Christmas story. There was no room in the Inns.
Finally, we came across a small Japanese Ryokan (Inn), where the proprietor, an elderly lady, told us she had no room either. Yoko explained our plight to her, and asked if she couldn’t find some place for us, out of the cold. She finally explained that she had a supply room, out in the back, where we could stay, but it would not be very comfortable. We said that beggars couldn’t be choosy, and so, she showed us into this room, and supplied us with a couple of straw mats to lie on and a couple of blankets. We were grateful for her gesture, but the room was not heated, and it still was quite chilly, after we got undressed.
Paul laid on one of the mats, across from us, and Yoko and I shared the other mat, together. The first time we had ever slept with each other. We snuggled close to each other in order to keep warm, and before too long, I could not stand it any longer, and asked her if it was O.K. She whispered yes, and then, for the first time, we had sex.My God, was she good! It was the most wonderful feeling I’ve ever had! We tried to keep as quiet as possible, because Paul was only a few feet away, but I’m sure he heard us breathing hard and hearing the sounds of true love coming from across the room. And then we fell asleep.
The next morning we woke and got dressed and caught the train back to Yokohama. In January, we were married, and we have stayed happily married these 55 years. We have three children, one daughter and two sons. And to this day, I always remember that wonderful December 24th, 1956. And to this day, I can’t believe that what we did was wrong. It was beautiful!I can still feel her body responding to mine on that Christmas Eve long ago.
