I was married in 1960, just before women’s lib and free sex became the norm. having come of age in the 50s, i was still a virgin wheni married, or what we called demi-virgin, everything but intercourse with my husband. my mother was a strong-willed jewish mother (aren’t they all?) and warned us that if I got pregnant before marriage i would have to lie in my bed. since condoms were not so easy to come by and i wanted to be a “good girl,” i waited. my father gave each of his sons and son-in-laws a gross of rubbers as a wedding present.
on my wedding night we traveled by air to puerto rico, so we really had no wedding nite. the next morning we had intercourse for the first time with a lubricated condom. i felt absoluitely nothing and in fact the rubber came off inside me and i thought for sure i had gotten pregnant on my wedding nite, which was a no-no since i was putting my husband thru grad school with my teaching job and if i were pregnant, all these plans would dissolve. the whole hopneymoon i kept thinking, I waited 22 years for this?” As a result I have advised my youngest daughter to have at least one serious relationship before marriage or living with someone. Sex can be beautiful and wonderful with the right partner, but at least one has to be experienced. While my ex-husband was not a virgin, he had little experience “amking love,” and I had none. Of course, I have corrected thatin 30 years and now I put a high priority on mutually satisfying sexual and sensual realtionsips. I thinksex can be a wonderful form of communication with the right partner who is considerate, caring and loving. Ditto for me as the partner. Maybe we should have more premarital sex counseling.
The dispaoointment on my honeymoon is still fresh in my mind.
